RMGC Golf Course - Hole 2

The Royal Malta Golf Club presides over Malta’s only golf course offering 18 holes of golf in stunning, historical, landscaped grounds, which are maintained daily. At par 68 the course is a good challenge for the more experienced, without being unkind to the novice providing an enjoyable challenge for the holiday golfer and low handicap player alike.

We can organise PGA qualified teaching for those who wish to learn or improve their game, or competitions with local golfers, together with hotel accommodation, airport transfers and guided excursions.

History

The Royal Malta Golf Club was founded in 1888 by Lieutenant-General Sir Henry D’Oyley Torrens KCB KCMG with a clubhouse in St. Anne’s Ditch and a 9-hole course laid out around the bastions, better known as the Hornworks. The club moved to its present location in 1904 .

After one hundred years of existence the Club upgraded the course. The first part of the project started in early 1988 when the Club brought in consultants from the United Kingdom to re-do the 18 greens. The second phase started in May 1989. To date the course has been totally upgraded with the fairways planted with Bermuda grass, the installation of a computerised wall-to-wall watering system, the refurbishment of some 50 sand bunkers designed by David Llewellyn and the re-planting of the tees with TifSport grass and the greens with state of the art TifEagle grass.

Coupled with significant investment in course maintenance machinery, and the engagement of an experienced green keeping staff, these improvements ensure that Royal Malta Golf Club offers a superior golfing experience in the southern Mediterranean.

The golf club has enjoyed a long history and in June 2013 celebrated its 125 year anniversary with visitors from Royal clubs around the world joining for the celebrations.

The Club

_SAM8458The Club is first and foremost a Members club but one which will certainly make visitors most welcome on our sunny Mediterranean island where our hospitality awaits you.

On entering the recently refurbished clubhouse one finds a welcoming Reception desk, Pro Shop, large storage room for members’ clubs and trolleys, together with the Putters Inn Bar & Restaurant and Members Lounge. On the first floor one finds the Terrace View Bar overlooking the course, a meeting room and men’s and ladies’ changing rooms.

The Terrace View bar is open for breakfast and lunch to both club members and visitors during the warmer periods of the year. Stunning views of the course can be enjoyed from an excellent vantage point, seated in a modern, comfortable yet casual setting. The menu incorporates favourite classics, Maltese specials and light bites. So whatever your mood or hunger, there’s something to satisfy you.

The Putters Inn Bar & Restaurant is the perfect retreat for those colder months. Dine indoors by the beautiful open fireplace in a relaxed and cosy atmosphere for an enjoyable meal.

The Royal Malta Golf Club provides well equipped and spacious changing rooms and showers. Golf lockers are available for rent by the day or week, whilst golf clubs, trolleys and electric buggies can be rented from reception. A wide range of golf equipment and merchandise is also available for purchase at the Pro Shop. There are also extensive practice facilities, including a driving range, and several putting and pitching practice greens.

This private members club is part of the Marsa Sports Club which offers members of the RMGC a number of other sports facilities.

The Putters Inn (Winter) and Terrace View Bar (Summer) are normally open to members and visitors from 9am to dusk. Coffee and sandwiches are served at all times and lunch, which can be anything from a snack to a full meal is served between noon and 3.30pm . Although reservations are generally not required, it is advisable to book for Sunday lunch. The restaurant has a seating capacity of 80, but this number can go up to 200 with the use of the Terrace View Bar. Arrangements can be made in advance for private functions for members their family and guests, and special requirements can be arranged.

The Course

hole 8The course provides 18 holes of golf in an ideal setting for playing golf with friends, working on your handicap or just relaxing in the beautifully maintained grounds – a quiet and green oasis in the heart of the island

The apparent simplicity of the course is deceptive as it is narrow demanding accuracy off the tee and controlled approach shots as the greens are small and well bunkered. Depending on the season, there is not much water on the course but a few strategically placed water hazards lie in wait.
