Malta amongst most beautiful 8 island countries in the World

IAM ARCHITECT has included Malta amongst its Most Beautiful 8 Island Countries in the World: “Malta is a beautiful southern European country in the Mediterranean Sea, which has a rich history and culture.”

The Maltese islands are home to 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites:

Valletta

Malta’s majestic capital city was ruled successively by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and the Order of the Knights of St. John. Valletta’s 320 monuments, all within an area of 55 hectars, make it one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.

Megalithic Temples of Malta

The seven megalithic temples found on the islands of Malta and Gozo include two temples in Ggantija notable for their gigantic Bronze Age structures and the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Tarxien which are unique architectural masterpieces. The oldest temples where built in c.3000 B.C. and are have been claimed to be the oldest free-standing structures on Earth, predating the Egyptian pyramids and UK’s Stonehenge.

Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Hypogeum is an enormous subterranean structure excavated in c.2500 B.C., using cyclopean rigging to lift huge blocks of coralline limestone. Perhaps originally a sanctuary, it became a necropolis in prehistoric times.

Other local sites have been submitted to UNESCOs World Heritage Site Tentative List including the islands’ Coastal Cliffs, Qawra/Dwejra, Cittadella (Victoria – Gozo), Knights’ Fortifications around the Harbours of Malta, Mdina (Citta’ Vecchia), Malta’s Catacomb Complexes and the Victoria Lines Fortifications.
